Working an allotment has been a hugely satisfying pastime for millions over centuries. Not only is this a source of home-grown produce, nearly always uncontaminated by pesticides, artificial fertilisers and certainly ‘food-miles’, but the community of the horticultural scene can enrich growing and play an important part in allotment-holders’ lives. Simon draws on twenty years of experience as an organic gardener and ten years experience as a regional presenter of horticultural items on Tyne Tees Television. He now gives much time to community horticulture: for more information, see his website: www.communityhorticulture.co.uk
