The Garden Station, Hexham, Northumberland, UK

Join Us

Would you like to be a ‘Fellow Traveller’ with The Garden Station?

The Garden Station is more than just a little private business. Why? Because people like you, reading this page, are interested in the heritage, the environment and the present activities of this unique place. We are setting up, in 2010, a ‘Fellow Travellers’ group: for details, read on..

Heritage

The railway and industrial heritage of Langley has shaped the landscape and continues to frame the garden and buildings even as, since 2000, The Garden Station has come into being and evolved. We would like interested people – railway enthusiasts, local historians and long-time residents of the village, for example – to contribute to telling the story of this heritage to present and future generations.

The Leaning Shed (the former platelayers shed) will become a little ‘history room’ where people can read about the Hexham to Allendale line, the Langley Smelt Works and The Garden Station. Old photos, information and oral history will all be part of the project.

I would like to express my interest in the ‘Fellow Travellers’ Heritage group

Nature

The garden and woodland surrounding the old station are a haven for wildlife, and interested members of the ‘Fellow Travellers’, young and old, will have the opportunity to take part in nature conservation, watching and walking down part of the track and through the woods, recording and informing. If you are a wildlife enthusiast, if you’re knowledgeable about woodland and trees, if you’d enjoy organic gardening as a volunteer with ‘Let’s Get Growing’, our gardening contractor, please express your interest in the ‘Fellow Travellers’ Nature group.

Low Impact Living

The Garden Station tries hard to keep its ‘footprint’ on the earth as light as possible. The café uses local produce, is vegetarian for reasons of land and water use, and uses organic ingredients to save our soil. ‘Fellow Travellers’ will offer idea-sharing and activities for people seeking low impact living.

I would like to express my interest in the ‘Fellow Travellers’ Low Impact Living group.

The Arts

On the first Thursday of each month, we host a ‘Make It together’ evening. Participants enjoy an informal evening of chatting and crafting, bringing whatever not-too-expansive crafts they happen to be working on. We provide a light supper menu.

Since the spring, members of the artists group ‘Art4’ have been observing and sketching the garden, woods and buildings. Working with them and with others, there will be opportunities to let nature and heritage inspire creativity and enjoyment, including both visual arts and writing.

I would like to express my interest in the ‘Fellow Travellers’ Arts group.

Future Developments

Who knows what else will come of this project? Perhaps the answer is: you do. Because it will be a project which Fellow Travellers will make interesting, friendly and practical – a project for the people.
